Is the winter weather giving you the blues? Is cabin fever slowly taking over? Well, get moving and start the new year off right with a few simple home repair jobs. If you take a slow walk through your home and do a careful inventory of every room, odds are you’ll find a few things that use a little maintenance. Here are a few things you might look for…

  1. Leaning Towel Rack or Wobbly Toilet Paper Holder – unscrew the fixture and locate the cause of the problem. It’s probably a push-in plastic drywall anchor. Remove the anchor and replace with something more sturdy like a toggle bolt. Threaded versions such as an  E-Z anchor will provide a solutions that’s quick and easy to install.

2.   Check for Squeaky Hinges – This is an easy fix and can be solved by simply applying powdered graphite along the pin where the wings turns. If the door sticks, use a plane to remove a little bit of wood, then touch up the paint so the repair isn’t noticeable.

3.    Noisy Floor Boards – If your floorboard is squeaking, anti-squeak kits can be purchased and feature specially designed screws that are easy to conceal. A lower cost option is to simply dust a little talcum powder into the seam where the floorboards meet. The talcum will act as a lubricant for the boards as they rub against each other, helping to eliminate the noise.
