Many people have a backyard deck attached to their house and having one gives you a lot of options for entertaining such as barbecues, eating al fresco, or simply sitting outside and enjoying the spring air. However, before you start with the festivities, take a moment to give your deck a second look and make sure it’s safe for the season. Here are 7 tips to help you along the way.
- Check the boards of the deck. Boards that are warped, splintering or mildewed can pose safety risks for you and your family. Brush down the surface of the deck, sand any problem areas and clean stains as if they were on the floor inside your house. Clean in between the cracks as well to give your deck a new lease on life.
- Check all the connection points along the deck. How is it connecting to the house, the stairs or even itself? Try the railing to make sure it’s sturdy and if necessary, go around with a drill, screwdriver, pliers, hammer and whatever else may be necessary to get everything in line.
- Go out into the yard and give your deck a long hard look to inspect for structure. Is it leaning at all? Are any boards warped or sagging? You may need to replace parts of your deck before it’s ready for the season.
- Now give the foundation and the footings of your deck a look. Are any of them sinking? If so, the whole structure may be affected. Repair these as necessary to make sure the deck is level.
